Journals devoted exclusively to research on sexual orientation and gender diversity.

Why do journals matter?

Many universities and psychological associations and societies, as well as some special interest groups, divisions or sections, publish journals with peer reviewed content. Journals are a key means for furthering research–based knowledge, and discussing important findings and ideas.

There are journals devoted to the topics of sexual orientation and gender diversity, and others that publish occasional special editions devoted to the topics or some aspects of them.

Special Issues

Occasionally, a particular edition of a journal will focus on a single topic, such as sexual orientation and gender diversity, or aspect of a topic, such as working with gender-nonconforming adolescents.

  • Gay and Lesbian Issues and Psychology Review
    Produced by the Australian Psychological Society's Gay and Lesbian Issues and Psychology Interest Group. The journal provides a much needed forum for publishing on issues relevant to LGBTI communities in Australia and abroad, and aims to bring together the perspectives of practitioners, researchers and activists.

    Routledge
    An internationally acclaimed, peer-reviewed publication devoted to publishing a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship to foster a thorough understanding of the complexities, nuances, and the multifaceted aspects of sexuality and gender.

  • The Journal of GLBT Family Studies
    Routledge
    The first journal to address the unique experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals in the context of the family. The journal publishes original research, as well as theoretical and review papers on topics exploring the impact of sexual orientation and gender identity on all aspects of family experience – including family structure, relationships, communication, therapy and functioning.

  • Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health
    Routledge
    This journal seeks out and publishes the most current clinical and research scholarship on LGBT mental health with a focus on clinical issues.

    It strives to represent the full breadth of LGBT mental health treatment, including issues relevant to patients and mental health care providers in all types of settings.  Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health also strives to cover the full spectrum of sexual and gender minority populations — lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and gender-queer.

  • The current study was conducted in order to compare the Early Maladaptive Schemata (EMS) in homosexual and bisexual people and compare them with the heterosexual group.  The results show that homosexual group scores in some schemata such as mistrust/abuse, defectiveness/shame, social isolation, emotional inhibition and sacrifice, were significantly higher than the heterosexual group.

  • Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity ®(PSOGD)
    American Psychological Association, Div. 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity)
    A quarterly scholarly journal dedicated to the dissemination of information in the field of sexual orientation and gender diversity, PSOGD is envisioned as the primary outlet for research particularly as it impacts practice, education, public policy and social action.

  • The Psychology of Sexualities Review
    British Psychological Society. An international peer-reviewed publication that is published annually.
